What is a Meta Tag?

Meta tags are text fragments that identify the content of a website; meta tags do not appear on the page itself, only in the source code of the page. In essence, meta tags are little descriptors of content that help tell search engines what a web page is about.

Optimising SEO

Meta tags provide search engines and website users who come across your website in the SERP with more information about your domain. In order to illustrate the most relevant elements of your content and make your website stand out in search results, they can be optimised for SEO purposes.

Key point:Some meta tag styles relate to the layout of the website and will make it easy to navigate your web, while others tell search engines which parts of your page are relevant and which to ignore.
